Organize A Letter-writing Campaign to Protest Mailing of Anti-Muslim Film, “Obsession”

The shadowy characters associated with the production and dissemination of the Anti-Muslim film, “Obsession”, are at it again. They are organizing from their website a letter writing campaign to the editors of the newspapers which were paid to mail out the film’s DVD. Their campaign is trying to convince these editors that they did nothing unethical or wrong.

Letter that the Anti-Muslim, Obsession, Site Is Using Against Muslims

Dear Publisher/Editor,

Thank you for including a copy of the film ‘Obsession: Radical Islam’s War against the West’ in your newspaper. I appreciate that you stood up against those who would have you suppress freedom of speech. ‘Obsession’ was very educational, providing me access to what the radical Islamists say, in their own words.

In particular, it was good how the film made a clear distinction between the radicals, who are the minority, and law-abiding Muslim citizens, who are the majority.

Actually, I am not sure why the Muslim community is so upset about the film. I would think that they would be the first to denounce the radical Islamists who tarnish the name of Islam. They should be speaking out against the radicals instead of condemning the film.

Again, thank you for sending the DVD and doing the right thing.

Organize an Anti-Obsession Letter Writing Campaign

By contrast, we are encouraging all Muslims to write a letter to the editor of your newspaper to protest the mailing of this Anti-Muslim video. Here is a sample letter written by Yasser Moten, Executive Director of the Council of American Islamic Relations, Nevada Chapter. This letter was published in the Las Vegas Review-Journal–one of the newspapers that mailed out the Obsession DVD several weeks ago. Please feel free to modify the letter below to send to your local newspaper editor. During this Holy Month of Ramadan, writing to clear the good name of Muslims and of Islam would be a good deed fisabilillah.

To the editor:

There is a very fine distinction between fact and fiction. While most can tell the difference, the producers of the anti-Muslim propaganda film “Obsession” fail miserably. Over the past two weeks, a shadowy organization called the Clarion Fund has paid 70 newspapers across the country — including the Review-Journal — to insert 28 million DVD copies of the film inside Sunday editions.

The film interviews a cabal of self-styled experts (such as Daniel Pipes, Steve Emerson and Walid Shoebat) who, coincidently, have based their careers on bashing everything Muslim. Interspersed between the “expert” interviews are scenes of carnage, death and crowds of angry Muslims. The film’s music is scary and ominous, more fitting for a horror film than a documentary. In the end, these elements intertwine to produce a single message: Muslims want to conquer you!

“Obsession” tries to pass itself off as a balanced documentary seeking to warn and educate Americans about the dangers of Islamic fundamentalism, but instead the film demonizes all Muslims as bloodthirsty orcs hell-bent on annihilating Western civilization. Accordingly, “Obsession” deserves a spot alongside other historical products of hate such as the pro-Ku Klux Klan film “Birth of a Nation” and the anti-Semitic text “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.”

While there can be no doubt the world faces a dangerous threat from terrorism, the film grossly exaggerates the issue by blanketing all Muslims as radicals and extremists. The problem of terrorism will not be solved by confusing the topic nor by alienating 1 billion Muslims. The key to eradicating terrorism is through tackling its root causes — and not viewing politically driven pieces of propaganda like “Obsession.”
