Note from Rafik Beekun: Allah in the Quran [Surah 27 verses 18-19] mentions that ants have their own language:

Till, when they came to the valley of the ants, one of the ants SAID: “O ants! Enter your dwellings, lest Sulaimân (Solomon) and his hosts crush you, while they perceive not.

So he (Solomon) smiled, amused at her speech; and he said: “O my Lord! so order me that I may be grateful for Thy favours, which thou hast bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may work the righteousness that will please Thee: And admit me, by Thy Grace, to the ranks of Thy righteous Servants.”

The lastest scientific research is now catching up with what was revealed in the Qur’an over 1400 years ago. Here are two fact from these two verses:

Ants communicate with one another via their own language

LONDON, Feb. 6 (UPI) — A British scientist says advanced audio technology shows ants talk together frequently while inside their nests.

Miniature microphones and speakers placed inside nests allowed scientists to play back sounds made by the queen, which called the ants to attention, The Times of London reported Friday.

“When we played the queen sounds they did ‘en garde’ behavior. They would stand motionless with their antennae held out and their jaws apart for hours — the moment anyone goes near they will attack,” Jeremy Thomas of the University of Oxford told The Times.

Thomas said further analysis may reveal ants have a wider vocabulary than previously suspected. [more]
The findings are published in the journal Science.

It was a female ant

As noted in the Quran in Surah 27, verse 19, Prophet Sulaiman (AS) [Solomon] upon hearing the words of the ant, smiled, amused at HER speech.

From the blog :Islam and Modern Science

In the verse, the ant in question is female. Just like in the case of bees, this use of feminine gender is significant. Colonies of ants show similarity with the hive of bees. The only function of male ants is to have sexual relations when they are mature. Male ants die soon after they copulate. All the work is performed by barren female ants in colonies. As in the case of the beehive, the colony is a world where reign the mother and sisters.

If we consider that it was the ant who guards and collects food that announced Solomon’s advancing army, then it must have been the female worker ant. If we consider that ant to be the most privileged and elite member of the caste, then the announcer must have been the queen ant, which is, of course, again a female.

It is estimated that there are 10 million ants per man. Magnitude and the vastness of numerical concepts are no problem for God. This shows again God’s power of creation. There are ants that eat leaves, cutting them with the mastery of a tailor; there are harvester ants that live in the desert, etc. All these are proof of the great wisdom and artistry of God. [more]
