Ann Coulter: Jews need to be “perfected”

In the above video, Ann Coulter discusses with Donny Deutsch on his Big Idea show about her views on Christianity and Jews, and what her version of a perfect world would be like. From the Media Matters Website.

Note from Rafik Beekun: Please note that what Ann Coulter said about Jews is the same kind of bigoted words Ann Coulter has uttered against Muslims in the past. One day after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Coulter wrote of Muslims: “We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity.” These comments resulted in her being fired by the conservative National Review. In her most recent book, How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must): The World According to Ann Coulter (Crown Publishing Group, 2004), Coulter wrote: “I am often asked if I still think we should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity. The answer is: Now more than ever!” She reiterated this stance on the October 4, 2004, edition of Fox News’ Hannity & Colmes:

COLMES: Would you like to convert these people all to Christianity?
COULTER: The ones that we haven’t killed, yes.
COLMES: So no one should be Muslim. They should all be Christian?
COULTER: That would be a good start, yes.

Ann Coulter: Kill Islamic Society in countries where fundamentalism occurs

On MSNBC, Ann Coulter fervently supports attacking and killing of Islamic society in all countries where Islamic fundamentalism exists. She asseted that civilian collateral damage is OK and parallels Islamic fanaticism with Nazism.

Samples of Ann Coulter’s Islamophobe statements

Example 1: In a November 30 syndicated column about the removal of six imams from an airplane in Minnesota after other passengers saw them praying prior to boarding, right-wing pundit Ann Coulter claimed that racially “profiling Muslims is more like profiling the Klan” than it is like profiling African-Americans, “because of the history of discrimination against blacks in this country.” Coulter added: “What did we do to the Arabs? I believe Americans are the victims in that relationship.” In the same column, Coulter referred to the spokesman for the six Muslims as their “designated liar,” claiming that is how “spokesman” is “phrased in their culture.

Example 2: In Ann Coulter’s April 28 syndicated column, titled “Arab Hijackers Now Eligible For Pre-Boarding,” the right-wing pundit described her search for the airline that, post-September 11, has “engaged in the most egregious discrimination” against passengers who appeared to be Arab, Middle Eastern, or Muslim, “so [Coulter] could fly only that airline.” Undeterred by airlines’ “heated” denials, Coulter suggested some “great slogans” for those airlines accused of the most egregious acts of discrimination:

“Like many of you, I carefully reviewed the lawsuits against the airlines in order to determine which airlines had engaged in the most egregious discrimination, so I could fly only that airline. But oddly, rather than bragging about the charges, the airlines heatedly denied discriminating against Middle Eastern passengers. What a wasted marketing opportunity! Imagine the great slogans the airlines could use:

“Now Frisking All Arabs — Twice!”
“More Civil-Rights Lawsuits Brought by Arabs Than Any Other Airline!”
“The Friendly Skies — Unless You’re an Arab”
“You Are Now Free to Move About the Cabin — Not So Fast, Mohammed!”

Example 3: From Ann Coulter’s February 15 column, “Muslim bites dog”: “The ‘offense to Islam’ ruse is merely an excuse for Muslims to revert to their default mode: rioting and setting things on fire. These people have a serious anger management problem. So it’s not exactly a scoop that Muslims are engaging in violence. A front-page story would be ‘Offended Muslims Remain Calm.’ ”

Example 4: From Coulter’s February 8 column:

One [cartoon] showed Muhammad turning away suicide bombers from the gates of heaven, saying “Stop, stop — we ran out of virgins!” — which I believe was a commentary on Muslims’ predilection for violence. Another was a cartoon of Muhammad with horns, which I believe was a commentary on Muslims’ predilection for violence. The third showed Muhammad with a turban in the shape of a bomb, which I believe was an expression of post-industrial ennui in a secular — oops, no, wait: It was more of a commentary on Muslims’ predilection for violence. […] The belief that Islam forbids portrayals of Muhammad is recently acquired. Back when Muslims created things, rather than blowing them up, they made paintings, frescoes, miniatures and prints of Muhammad. But apparently the Koran is like the Constitution: It’s a “living document,” capable of sprouting all-new provisions at will. Muslims ought to start claiming the Koran also prohibits indoor plumbing, to explain their lack of it. […] Making the rash assumption for purposes of discussion that Islam is a religion and not a car-burning cult, even a real religion can’t go bossing around other people like this. ”

Press Release from ADL (AntiDefamation League) about Ann Coulter

ADL Condemns Ann Coulter’s Comment That Jews Need ‘To Be Perfected’

New York, NY, October 12, 2007 .The Anti-Defamation League strongly condemns Ann Coulter for her anti-Semitic comment that Christians “want Jews to be perfected” in an interview with Donny Deutsch on CNBC’s “The Big Idea.” During her October 8 appearance, Coulter suggested that Jews should convert, adding that, “we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say. … That’s what Christianity is.”

Ann Coulter may be a political pundit but she clearly knows very little about religious theology and interfaith issues. Coulter’s remarks are outrageous, offensive and a throwback to the centuries-old teaching of contempt for Jews and Judaism. The notion that Jews are religiously inferior or imperfect because they do not accept Christian beliefs was the basis for 2,000 years of church-based anti-Semitism. While she is entitled to her beliefs, using mainstream media to espouse the idea that Judaism needs to be replaced with Christianity and that each individual Jew is somehow deficient and needs to be “perfected,” is rank Christian supersessionism and has been rejected by the Catholic Church and the vast majority of mainstream Christian denominations.

Clearly, Ann Coulter needs a wake-up call about the power of words to injure others and fuel hatred. She needs an education, too, about the roots of anti-Semitism and the shared values of Judaism and Christianity. Christians and Jews have worked tirelessly for more than 40 years to overcome the past and to promote a more tolerant and pluralistic vision for the future and especially for America.

Donny Deutsch is to be commended for his immediate and forceful denunciation of Coulter’s statements, for calling her remarks personally offensive, and for rightly characterizing her suggestion that Jews are inferior to Christians as anti-Semitism.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world’s leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
