The Division of Humanities, Faculty of Arts, York University invites applications for a tenure-stream appointment at the Assistant Professor level in the field of Islamic Studies. This appointment is to commence July 1, 2008 and is subject to budgetary approval.
We are seeking a candidate who is well grounded in the classical tradition of Islam and the historical development of issues of law, theology and gender as they relate to Islam in a comparative context. High proficiency in classical and standard Arabic is required and knowledge of another research language is preferred. Candidates should have a completed PhD in hand by the commencement of the appointment. The successful candidate will show evidence of a vigorous research agenda and promise of excellence in teaching.
Candidates should be able to teach in York’s first- and second-year interdisciplinary Foundations program and develop upper-level undergraduate courses; they must also have the potential to undertake graduate teaching and supervision. The successful candidate will be eligible for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The successful candidate will join the Program in Religious Studies within the Division of Humanities.
