It was a gesture of kindness and understanding during turbulent times.

On Friday, members of the Summit Christian Church in Spanish Springs presented a gift of flowers to
members of the Northern Nevada Muslim Cultural Center.

The gift was made during Eid ul Fitr, one of the Muslim faith’s most important religious holidays.

It also came the day before today’s ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and as the nation is increasingly embroiled in rancorous debate about the proposed construction of a mosque near New York’s ground zero and a Florida pastor’s threats to burn copies of the Quran, Islam’s holiest text.

It was a move well meant and well received. “It really means a lot. We were very, very touched,” said Rafik Beekun, a member of the Muslim center’s board of directors. “It’s beautiful.”

The decision to send flowers — followed by an e-mail and phone campaign to encourage other churches around the country to follow suit — was made by some members of the congregation a few days back, said Roger Yount, pastor of Summit Christian Church. [more]
