Good Samaritan 101: Thank you CBS and NBC for rejecting Islamophobic TV ad

Posted on July 15, 2010

Note from Rafik Beekun: The ad below is one of the most Islamophobic ads I have ever seen.  It has been launched by the National Republican Trust Pac, and plays on the worst fears of my fellow countrymen in the US.  As the former President of the Northern Nevada Republican Men’s club,  I deplore this ad because it does not fit the principles of the Republican party.   Clearly this group is a fringe group which has attached the name “Republican” within its name. On the positive side, I applaud both CBS and NBC for refusing to air this fear-mongering ad.

This ad was rejected by both NBC and CBS, and will not be aired on these two national TV channels.

NBC, CBS refuse ground zero mosque ad

CBS and NBC have refused to air a provocative ad from the confrontational, well-funded National Republican Trust PAC that calls on Americans to oppose the building of a mosque two blocks from the World Trade Center site. […]

In her letter rejecting the spot, NBC Universal advertising standards manager Jennifer Riley wrote:

“An ad questioning the wisdom of building a mosque at ground zero would meet our issues of public controversy advertising criteria. However, this ad which ambiguously defines ‘they’ as referenced in the spot makes it unclear as to whether the reference is to terrorists or to the Islamic religious organization that is sponsoring the building of the mosque. Consequently, the ad is not acceptable under our guidelines for broadcast.” [more]
