Islamophobia 101-Episode 8: Franklin Graham states that ‘Islam is evil’.

Posted on January 16, 2007

Franklin Graham has replaced his father, Billy Graham, in leading a major Christian evangelical organization. Billy Graham was one of President Bush’s most influential religious confidants.  Since taking over the reins, Franklin’s organization, Samaritan’s Purse, claims that it intends only to bring relief services to impoverished non-Christians, but has–according to other Christian organizations–worked only to convert people to its version of Christianity (with partial financial help from a US government agency, the USAID–see the Boston Globe article at the end of this post).

More recently, he has taken on Islam. Unfortunately, he does not distinguish between the nineteen criminals responsible for 9/11 and the world’s 1.2 billion Muslims.  If we were to use his rationale, should all Irish people be painted with the same brush as the IRA?  In contrast to the previous Pope who advocated for cooperation and understanding, some of Franklin’s statements (and the video below) demonstrate an unwillingness to understand, and work with, Muslims (Nov 16, 2001, appearing on Nightly News, according to MSNBC):

“We’re not attacking Islam but Islam has attacked us. The God of Islam is not the same God. He’s not the son of God of the Christian or Judeo-Christian faith. It’s a different God, and I believe it is a very evil and wicked religion.”The first part of the video below where he labels Islam as evil is specially enlightening:

Conveniently forgetting the Crusades, and all the wars (including the 2 World Wars) launched by leaders and armies of faiths other than Islam, and without checking historical facts, he asserts:

[The] persecution or elimination of non-Muslims has been a cornerstone of Islam conquests and rule for centuries.”

To understand Franklin Graham’s perspective of Islam, please click here to watch the video clip of Franklin Graham’s interview with PBS. In this video, he equates the God of the Jews with the God of the Christians, but he then claims that a few verses from the Bible were taken and sprinkled through the Qur’an, and that the God of the Muslims is not the same as the God of the Christians. (note from Rafik Beekun: Please notice that Franklin Graham seems to be confused here when he seems to imply that Jews believe that Jesus [peace be upon him] is the son of God — a belief that is contrary to historical and current Jewish belief.)

He has also been claiming that Muslims did not condemn 9/11, and that Muslim clerics have stayed ‘silent’. More about Franklin Graham’s intolerant view of Islam can be read by clicking here. Here is a website Franklin Graham should go to: where he can read for himself what Muslim leaders in North America and elsewhere have said, and where they have systematically condemned the horrendous acts of 9/11.  Here is also a link to a brochure released by the largest Islamic organization in North America, ISNA, clarifying the Muslm position on terrorism and religious extremism.   Please click here to download this brochure. The anti-terrorism and anti-extremism website also lists a very clear fatwa (religious opinion) against terrorism by the leading religious scholars in North America (the Fiqh Council of North America), and endorsed by over 145 Muslim organizations and imams as of 2005. Similar fatwas have been declared by Muslim scholars around the world (see the ISNA brochure referred to above). Please click here to see the consistent and universal condemnation of the September 11 attacks by national and international Muslim associations, scholars and ‘clerics’ from the whole Muslim world. The Council on American Islamic Relations has also been carrying out a petition entitled “Not in the Name of Islam” to disassociate the name of Islam from the acts of a few Muslims. As of January 2007, over 690,000 Muslims have signed it (including me). Please click here to view the petition.

On another note, to see the real face of the ‘relief’ work done by Franklin Graham’s organization, Samaritans Purse, please look at the following website: Campaign Against Operation Christmas Child. Shamelessly exploiting dire situations such as war, drought or famine in Subsaharan Africa and/or other Muslim countries, this organization tries to bring desperate people within the folds of its version of Christianity. Here is a very enlightening article  dated October 8, 2006 (entitled ‘A US Boost to Graham’s quest for Converts’) from the Boston Globe about the proselytizing efforts of Samaritans Purse, and the financial support it is receiving from an agency in the US government, USAID.
